Spencer McCarthy, Chairman and Group Managing Director

Spencer has a wealth of experience in the retirement sector and with his brother Clinton has successfully built up the Churchill Retirement Living business since its formation in 1994 to become one of the leading retirement property developers in the country. He was a finalist in the Ernst and Young ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ Southern Region 2004 and 2008.

As Chairman, Spencer oversees the business in its entirety, however his key areas of expertise lie in Land Buying, Design, Planning and Sales & Marketing.

Clinton McCarthy, Managing Director

With over 30 years experience in the building industry, the vast majority being in the retirement sector, we have Clinton, the other half of this dynamic partnership.  Clinton’s expertise lies in Commercial, Construction and Customer Services, hence his focus on leading these areas of the business to ensure the company continually strives for excellence.  Clinton was a finalist in the Ernst and Young ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ Southern Region 2008.

Dean Marlow FCCA, Finance Director

Dean joined Churchill Retirement Living in 2000 and has been responsible for updating many aspects of the financial reporting, daily accounting and budgetary systems of the Company, gaining invaluable experience of every aspect of the operation. He joined the Board in April 2002 and has become a key member of the team, involved in making both strategic and commercial decisions and being a key part of the team that guided the business through recession.  Dean is also responsible for managing the car fleet and ICT requirements and was instrumental in upgrading the company’s IT infrastructure during 2002. He is also Managing Director of Millstream Management Services, a company set up by the Churchill Group to offer first class personal service to Owners living in Churchill Retirement Living developments.

Harry Harrison, Non-Executive Director

Harry joined McCarthy and Stone in 1972 and during his 20 years with the Company he worked his way up to become a plc Director, Chairman of McCarthy & Stone Developments Ltd and had responsibility for Construction, Property, Sales & Marketing, PR, Personnel, Plant and Transport.

After leaving McCarthy & Stone in 1992, Harry formed his own building company and property consultancy, providing advice to banks on problem accounts during the recession of the early 1990s. Harry has provided advice to Churchill Retirement Living over many years and was elected a Non-Executive Director in 2004. He has served on the Board since then and, as part of his role, he is involved in all strategic planning and has specific responsibility for HR.

John McCarthy

John founded McCarthy and Stone in 1963, moving the business into the retirement sector in 1977. In 1982 he took the Group to the AIM market and rolled out the regional operations, before moving to the LSE in 1984, when the Group was valued at £30m.

John retired from McCarthy and Stone in January 2004 and finally severed all ties in mid 2004, when he sold his remaining shares in the business and at that time was also appointed as a Non-Executive Director of Churchill Retirement Living. Over his 54 year career in the building industry John has received many business accolades, including:

  •     Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his contribution to the Elderly
  •     Master Entrepreneur of the Year South Region 2001
  •     Overall Entrepreneur of the Year South Region 2001
  •     PwC Director of the Year 1996
