Combat Loneliness in 2016

Esther BerkhamstedAt Churchill Retirement Living, we understand that loneliness can be a big problem as we get older. In fact, despite the recent focus on loneliness in older people, 55% of over 60s still believe there is a stigma attached to admitting to being lonely, according to our new research.

The Silver Line charity, founded by Dame Esther Rantzen, discovered that from 90,000 callers, many of them were older people who live alone and say that they cannot admit their feelings of loneliness to anyone else. These people have even gone so far as to say that they have nobody else to talk to.

With this in mind, we have launched our Leave Loneliness Behind campaign with our ambassador Dame Esther Rantzen. We're aiming to raise awareness and help everyone to have a happy, enjoyable retirement.

The charity campaigner and broadcaster has spoken out about her own experience of loneliness and said:

“I know from personal experience that there is still a stigma to admitting you’re lonely, but I believe we should be honest about our loneliness, so that others can help. We have a huge loneliness epidemic in this country, and it isn’t enough just to talk about it, we have to find ways of solving it.

“Let’s all work together to leave loneliness behind in 2016. There is no shame in loneliness, and there are many things that can be done to break down the barriers it creates. When you know how much damage loneliness can do to physical and mental health, you realise how crucial it is that we all try to solve this problem.”

At Churchill Retirement Living, we want to leave loneliness behind in 2016 and help people enjoy a happy, healthy, active retirement. Living alongside like-minded neighbours provides reassurance that there is always someone nearby to talk to or have a cup of tea with.

We hold a number of different events at our Lodges all across the country, enabling our Owners to take part in a ready-made social life if they wish. Non-Owners can also come along to some of these events, giving them the opportunity to get together and meet new people, raise awareness of loneliness and even raise money for charities.

For more information on any of the events being held at our Lodges, please click here to find your nearest development. Together, we can Leave Loneliness Behind and help older people enjoy their retirement to the full.
