A former RAF worker from Romsey has raised more than £1,000 for an armed forces charity.
84-year old Jim Litchfield, who lives at Churchill Retirement Living’s Abbey Lodge development in Romsey, has been a keen fundraiser for Help for Heroes for over five years.
Jim worked in the RAF for 27 years as a flight engineer and air frame fitter, and has been an avid supporter of the charity after seeing the wonderful work they do.
Jim said: “My wife Carine and I had always supported local charities, and Help for Heroes was one of our favourites given my past connection to the Royal Air Force. For our Diamond Wedding Anniversary we asked our friends and family to donate to Help for Heroes rather than buy us any presents. We already had more than enough collectables and thought it would be nicer to give the money to charity instead.
“My wife sadly passed away last year, so instead of buying funeral flowers, we requested that the money go to the charity instead. We raised more than £1,000 in total, which I’m very proud of. I still regularly fundraise for Help for Heroes and have organised for a collection box to sit permanently in the reception at Abbey Lodge too, as well as selling badges and wrist bands. The work that the charity does for our wounded soldiers is fantastic, and I hope to raise even more in the future.”
Jim moved to Abbey Lodge a year ago after selling his home in New Milton in exchange for a one-bedroom apartment at the Lodge on Bridge Road.
“At the time, my wife was in poor health and we were living in a large bungalow that had become too much for us to maintain. I took great pride in my garden so it was a hard decision to make, but we realised that it was the right time to downsize. We were in the process of purchasing the apartment when my wife passed away, it was very hard but everybody at the Lodge has been very helpful and supportive. There is always someone passing by for a chat and a great selection of events are held in the Owners’ Lounge. I thoroughly enjoy it here and am pleased I can keep up my fundraising too.”
Abbey Lodge comprises 29 privately-owned, purpose-built one and two-bedroom apartments for the over 60s.
