Boldmere St Michael’s senior team went head-to-head with Aston Villa on 17th July sporting new home kit emblazoned with their new sponsors, Churchill Retirement Living. The fixture, where Villa beat ‘The Mikes’ 6 goals to 3 was the fifth year that The Mikes have taken on their Premier League neighbours, and this year, like the others, was fantastic entertainment, pulling in a record crowd of 800 people. Just before kickoff Churchill Retirement Living’s Midlands Marketing Executive Hayley Robinson and Sales Consultant Jayne Naylor presented a framed shirt to the Club.
Churchill Retirement Living, whose Steeple Lodge development is next door to Boldmere St Michael’s club on Church Road, has recently been appointed as sponsors and is delighted to support this 130-years old local club. Churchill’s Regional Managing Director Doug Jones says: “As a company we believe it is extremely important to build good relationships with local clubs and support the communities where we build.”
The Aston Villa match was the perfect occasion to unveil the new kit and launch the sponsorship. For Boldmere St Michael’s, it is the highlight of each year. Villa always sends a strong team and several of their star players, including striker Andreas Wieman, have played in previous matches. Club Commercial Manager Rob Clark says. “It’s a very prestigious game for us, especially as Aston Villa don’t play that many friendlies. But here, the game is always played in the right spirit and for us it’s fantastic to get extra people in to a local match. This year we invited 2,000 local under 12’s to come to the match free of charge, and it was great to see so many of them here tonight.” Former premier league and villa professional footballer Stiliyan Petrov – now assistant coach – also came to support the youth team, along with Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert.
“We’re a very traditional club, set up by St Michaels Church 130 years ago,” continues Rob Clark. “The club has been going through a few changes recently, and we want to re-establish our place at the centre of the community. We’ve always had a strong presence here and we want to maintain this link as well as being good neighbours. Steeple Lodge is just a few yards along Church Road and is quite superb - it is a welcome addition to the area.”
