Most of Churchill Retirement Living’s customers have a property to sell before they can make the move, but rightsizing is something that concerns many who are retired and is often an obstacle to moving. The Retirement Lifestyle Specialist is constantly seeking to simplify their Owners’ lives and combat any fears they may have about a move; their recent decision to work with the Senior Move Partnership is aimed towards providing help in such cases.
With this scheme, Churchill Retirement Living offers six hours of a ‘Move Manager’s’ time, initially, to reassure a customer that rightsizing/downsizing is possible. Thereafter customers are provided with assistance which can range from support and advice on minimizing possessions to help with the move itself. Joan James – now living in Steeple Lodge in Sutton Coldfield - found the Senior Move Partnership scheme was an enormous help, not only with the move itself, but also in helping to assess what needed to be done before relocating.
“I was downsizing from a family home - a three-bedroom detached property – which had become increasingly difficult to maintain, both practically and financially. I had retired a year previously and been having some health problems and I knew that a move would help me to be more in control of my day to day life.” Joan knew that she wanted to stay in the area – she is a JP as well as a school governor - and the locality suited her needs. She had been looking in the local paper for some time and it was after a lunch out with her daughter, one day in September, that she paid a visit to Steeple Lodge. “My daughter suggested we go take a look but I was not keen, I don’t know why, but I just didn't want to. She eventually persuaded me and I just fell in love with it there and then.” Joan moved in to her new apartment in December and says she can’t thank her Move Manager – Catherine – enough in helping her with the move.
“Catherine from the Senior Move Partnership was brilliant – I can’t speak highly enough of her. I was going to have to do the move on my own as I don’t have family nearby, but then I was offered the six hours help, free of charge, from Churchill Retirement Living. I am quite fit and still able to do most things, but I knew I would need help on the day of the move. Had it not been for the help of the Move Manager I don’t know what I would have done. Catherine just got on with it all – she helped with the packing, the sorting, the clearing and cleaning up – she just didn't stop. She was with me far longer than the allocated hours and I honestly could not have done it without her. “
Joan has settled well into her new environment and is pleased with the location of the Lodge, which is only a few hundred yards from where she used to live. “I knew I wanted to stay in this area and be close to the shops and the train station. Jayne – the Sales Consultant – was brilliant when we first looked round. She took the time to show us the Lodge and its facilities as well as several of the apartments. They were all so different and well thought out – they have some nice features such as coving and sloping ceilings which provides interest and character. I knew as soon as I saw the apartments that this was where I wanted to live.”
Joan has two small dogs who have also settled well into their new environment and she says; “I wouldn't have moved here if I hadn't been able to bring them too. It is so lovely that I have them with me and the other Owners are very nice with them – I make sure they are kept near me but they all seem genuinely pleased to see them.” Plus the lifestyle suits Joan – “it gives me independent living, I am able to close my own front door but know that I have the security and back-up if I need it.”
Joan says her experience of Churchill Retirement Living and the Senior Move Partnership has been without fault. She would certainly highly recommend the lifestyle as well as the help of the Move Manager. “If it hadn't been for Catherine the move would have been very different. She was such a great help and an integral part of the whole process. I had so many boxes which were only offloaded by 10 pm that I had no time to unpack, but Churchill very kindly put me up in the guest suite. Everybody was so kind and helpful.”
Joan clearly adores her new home and surroundings and considers life at Steeple Lodge will provide her with the “perfect” mix of independence and support.
