Eaton Lodge Owners make their garden grow

Green-fingered retirees at Churchill Retirement Living’s Eaton Lodge in Chester have set up a gardening club to share their passion for all things horticultural.

Owners at the development have begun to meet regularly to tend the grounds of the apartments on Hoole Road. Jean Mackmurdie was one of the Owners who started the project.

She said: “I moved here seven months ago and the garden was landscaped and well maintained but a bit green. A group of us with ground floor flats decided we’d try and do a little around our homes and it’s really turned into something. We’ve added perennials in the borders to give colour year on year and we’ve added annuals in pots on our patios and it’s made a huge difference. We’ve got real summer colour now.”

Mrs Mackmurdie moved from Nantwich to the development in Chester and wanted to continue her hobby when she moved into the Lodge. She said: “I’ve always loved gardening and I’ve always had nice gardens, so it’s lovely to be able to continue that here at Eaton Lodge.  I just love to be outside, pottering, weeding or deadheading – I’ll find something to do!”

Bill Morgan, who moved to Eaton Lodge last November, also tends the garden around his apartment. He said: “I had a big four bedroom detached home with a lovely garden for which my wife won prizes. I lost her two years ago and it was a lot to look after on my own. I decided to move to Eaton Lodge, but it was one of the stumbling blocks – I had to really think about whether I could do without my garden. But Churchill has allowed us to tend to the grounds here and I’ve enjoyed doing it.”

Mr Morgan is 92 and has lived within two miles of Eaton Lodge for his entire life.  He said: “I do know this area as I have lived here all my life – the Lodge is opposite the church I’ve been involved with for the last 46 years and the park where my wife and I used to go. I do feel at home here but I do miss my garden, so gardening here has made a real difference. I have dug over my patch, added new top soil and rooted out a few of the bigger bushes to make room for some delphiniums and phlox. It’s coming on nicely now – there’s lots of colour. Its only small but there’s always something to do.”

Two more Owners, John Ellison and Anne Rowe, also garden at the Lodge with other Owners coming and giving a hand. Churchill has donated a shed to the club to store equipment, tools and potting compost.

Alan Perry, Regional Managing Director for Churchill Retirement Living, said: “Owners at Churchill Lodges are very social and active and often set up clubs which allow them to share their favourite pastimes and hobbies. We were delighted install a shed to help the gardening club at Eaton Lodge and we’re delighted with the beautiful display of colour resulting from their efforts.”

Eaton Lodge is a stylish collection of just 33 one and two bedroom senior apartments close to all the amenities of Hoole Village, just outside the City of Chester.
