Moving house during your retirement years can be stressful but having a team of experts on hand to take over not only the selling process but also the move itself, can really take the worry out of downsizing.
Churchill Retirement Living’s Home Exchange scheme is helping older movers across the country move into their ideal retirement property in just a matter of weeks. One such success story is that of Pat Vendryes, who sold her home in Bickley to move to Churchill’s new Atkins Lodge retirement development in Orpington.
Pat had already downsized once from a large Edwardian property in Bromley and was living in a three bedroom bungalow. However, after a few years the upkeep needed on the bungalow and garden was becoming too much for Pat and she decided it was time to move to a lower maintenance property.
“My family were quite surprised when I said I was selling my bungalow as they know how much I loved my garden,” explained Pat. “But it was all just becoming too much for me to handle. A friend of mine had recently looked at a Churchill development and suggested a retirement development like this could be just the thing for me. I saw that they were building a new development in Orpington and went to have a look. I knew right away that I could be very happy here and now was the time to make a move.”
Using Churchill’s Home Exchange scheme, Pat received help every step of the way and in May 2015 was one of the first purchasers to move into a luxury apartment at Atkins Lodge.
“The thought of moving house was very stressful,” explains Pat. “I knew I was going to need help and Churchill’s Home Exchange service offered the perfect solution. It made the whole process so easy and I didn’t have to worry about dealing with buyers or the sale falling through. The team on site were there whenever I needed support or guidance and to sort out any issues along the way– I really don’t think I could have done it without them. When it came to actually moving, I used Churchill’s removal service, Britannia. They were absolutely fantastic, they sorted everything out for me and I didn’t have to do a thing!”
One of the things which attracted Pat to Atkins Lodge was its proximity to the all the amenities and facilities on offer in Orpington. She added: “The development is perfectly located at the top of the High Street with everything you need just on the doorstep. There’s a dentist and hairdressers opposite and the leisure centre and shops are all within easy walking distance.
“Giving up my garden was upsetting but the development is opposite Priory Gardens so now I get to enjoy the lovely outdoor space without doing any of the work.
“I was a little bit nervous about moving but it is lovely to be surrounded by like-minded neighbours and there's already a sense of community here. The Lodge manager organises regular coffee mornings, and everyone has been very kind; especially when I was unable to go out for a few weeks after having a knee operation.
“I'm so glad I made the decision to move here and so are my family, they think it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I’ve always been very active and now moving here and being able to retain my independence really has given me a whole new lease of life.”
Pat is now well settled in her new home and enjoying the security, peace of mind and independence which is at the heart of all Churchill’s carefully considered retirement developments.
