The saying life begins at retirement couldn’t be truer for Sheila Craig since she made the move to Churchill Retirement Living’s Holyshute Lodge in Honiton.
Sheila had been living in Sweden with her husband, having made the move to support her daughter and disabled grandchild. But, after nine years, she decided to return to the UK.
Sheila said: “I loved living in Sweden. Everything there is set up for the people and it is a very interesting, multicultural society. I have always been a sociable, active person and so got involved in a number of groups including Zumba and Bridge. I also tried to learn the language, but found it very difficult to pick up.
“After my husband died, and with the language barrier to overcome, I found myself becoming quite lonely. It was on a holiday in Devon, that my niece suggested it might be time to return. My son and three nieces all live in Devon, so it seemed a good place to start looking. I saw that Holyshute Lodge was being built and followed its progress. As soon as I saw the amazing show complex, I put my house in Sweden on the market and moved within six weeks.”
A retired comprehensive school teacher, Sheila was particularly taken with Holyshute Lodge’s friendly and sociable atmosphere. Sheila now enjoys catching up with her fellow Owners and getting involved in the variety of activities on offer in Honiton.
Sheila continues: “The lifestyle at Holyshute Lodge is exactly what I was looking for. I like to be independent and I enjoy the company of others. There is always someone to talk to here if you want to and all the Owners at the Lodge have such interesting stories to tell.
“There is also lots going on in Honiton for older people. I have joined the WI and the local University of the Third Age, where I am meeting new people and developing skills all the time. I also like to keep active. In Sweden, I cycled a lot as everywhere was so flat. Now, with the help of the Lodge Manager, Nikki, we are looking to set up keep fit classes at the Lodge for all the Owners to enjoy.”
Holyshute Lodge comprises 41 modern apartments and communal facilities, designed exclusively for the over 60s with features such as illuminated light switches and easy-turn lever taps. For complete peace of mind, each apartment is also fitted with a camera entry system, a 24 hour emergency call system and an intruder alarm system.
In addition to its range of thoughtfully designed apartments, the Lodge also offers a Wellbeing Suite, a Guest Suite and an Owners’ Lounge – ideal for meeting friends and hosting events. Located right on the edge of the historic town of Honiton, it is ideally placed for the high street with its range of shops and activities.
Safety and security in our developments is our priority
Like all of Churchill’s retirement developments, Holyshute Lodge benefits from a highly secure camera entrance system, which monitors all visitors to the building. For added peace of mind, owners can also inform the Lodge Manager of any planned holidays or longer spells out of the country so extra care can be taken to ensure their properties are safe during their time away.
