Local school children are winners when it comes to site safety

A Wetherby pupil has won a site safety poster competition with retirement developer Churchill Retirement Living.

Nicollas K from Crossley Street Primary School was awarded first prize in the competition to design a poster to warn children about the dangers posed by construction sites ahead of the summer holidays.

The competition was part of a talk given to pupils by Andrew Wallace, Contracts Manager at Churchill Retirement Living, who visited the school to talk to children about the dangers of playing on building sites. The reception class were then invited to Churchill Retirement's Tatterton Lodge development in Wetherby to meet the construction team and find out more about site safety.

The children learnt about the different types of plant machinery, the importance of Personal Protective Equipment – clothing items that must be worn on any site – and respecting fencing and signage.

Winner Nicollas and runners-up Oliver and Poppy were awarded book vouchers for their winning entries.

Andrew Wallace, Contracts Manager at Churchill Retirement Living said: “It is so important for children to understand the dangers of playing on building sites so we were pleased to have the opportunity to work with Crossley Street Primary School. It was wonderful to see how enthusiastic they were about the work that we do and how excited they were to hear about some of the big machinery that we use.”

Mrs Wade, Reception teacher at Crossley Street Primary School, said: “We are extremely grateful to Churchill Retirement Living for coming in to talk to the children and running the poster competition - it was a great opportunity for the children to discover what happens on site each day and to be reminded why it’s so important not to play on building sites. The class thoroughly enjoyed the visit and it might have even inspired some of them to consider a career in construction when they grow up!”

Tatterton Lodge is located on the edge of the town centre and will comprise 56 privately owned, self-contained apartments that are specially designed for retired Owners, with features such as a video-entry system, lift to all floors, a 24 hour care and support system, and a Lodge Manager.
