New move is a trip down memory lane in Truro

70 years after being evacuated to Cornwall during World War II, a retiree has decided to call the county home after falling in love with its beauty all those years ago.

79-year old John Roberts was evacuated to St Ives in 1943. After living and working in Germany for the past 40 years, John decided it was time to move back to the UK to enjoy his retirement and knew Cornwall was the place that he wanted to call home. He purchased an apartment at Churchill Retirement Living’s Tregolls Lodge in Truro and hasn’t looked back since.

He said: “When we were evacuated there wasn’t much we could do about the situation at the time, but I was grateful that we were relocated to St Ives. I grew very fond of Cornwall during that time, and I knew this was a place that I’d like to move back to one day. I stayed with a local family, the Stevens, and was treated as a family member.

“Before retiring, I worked as a contracts administrator for 18 years as part of the Tornado Project – a combat aircraft jointly manufactured by the UK, Italy and Germany. I moved to Germany in 1977 to begin working in the Contracts Division for the Tornado Project where my role included administering contracts between all three countries. I was based in Munich, which was a lovely location to live.”

With its welcoming community, close proximity to amenities and no worries about maintenance, Tregolls Lodge ticked all the right boxes for John. He left Germany earlier this year and moved into his new apartment in July.

John, who likes to keep active and is a keen skier, added: “I’m pleased I made the move and have settled in wonderfully. Our Lodge Manager Cheryl Hinton has been extremely helpful helping me to organise my new apartment while I finalised my German matters. I now have my free bus pass and a current UK driving licence and am looking forward to exploring the region more. My brother lives an hour away in Port Isaac so we can regularly visit each other as well. It’s a decision that I am very pleased that I made!”
