For Mrs Coulson, making a move to Churchill Retirement Living’s Saffron Lodge development in Saffron Walden has meant fewer worries and more time for family, friends and her lifelong hobby.
Originally from Falkirk, Mrs Coulson relocated to the South East when her husband’s job in the chemicals industry brought him to London. She had been living in her previous home for 30 years when she realised it was becoming too much to manage.
Mrs Coulson said: “I realised that it was silly to be on my own in such a large house. My daughter lives in Saffron Walden and helped me make the move to Saffron Lodge. My new apartment is lovely and I have no worries. My daughter lives just across town and she is happy knowing I am well looked after here.
“My children, grandchildren and great grandchildren all come to visit and I am also enjoying the company of my fellow Owners. We recently enjoyed a meal together at Christmas – everyone gathered in the Owners’ Lounge for a glass of wine and the Lodge Manager, Lesley, served an absolutely delicious meal.”
As well as family and friends, Mrs Coulson also enjoys spending time doing her lifelong hobby, tapestry, as she continues: “I have been creating tapestry since I was a young girl. My passion for tapestry really started during World War II when we had to spend hours in the air raid shelters. Since then I have completed many tapestries, some of which I’ve given to friends and family, others are on my wall. My favourite is a tapestry of a white stallion, which involved learning a complex stich, and now takes pride of place in my lounge.
“A large tapestry can take a few years, on and off, to complete and it is a hobby I have enjoyed all my life. Living at Saffron Lodge, I have less maintenance to worry about and more time to do the things I enjoy and spend time with friends and family.”
Saffron Lodge comprises 31 one and two bedroom privately-owned retirement apartments and shared facilities designed exclusively for the over 60s. Located on Radwinter Road, it enjoys a central location, just a short distance from the picturesque town centre and from public transport links.
