That's what friends are for

In celebration of National Family Week this May, we met up with two of our Owners, at Spicer Lodge, who told us a warming story about how important family and friendship at the Lodge is to them.

Maintaining a home can prove difficult in your later years, but for Edna Wheeler, a recommendation from a friend allowed her to enjoy a stress-free retirement with valuable independence and peace-of mind, at Churchill Retirement Living’s Spicer Lodge development in Stourbridge.

Edna, aged 84, moved into her new one bedroom apartment at Spicer Lodge last year from the nearby town of Halesowen. The move followed a recommendation from her long-term friend, Enid Nash, after making the bold decision to sell her three bedroom family home, where she had lived for over 50 years, to enjoy a more relaxing and maintenance-free retirement.

Edna commented: “Enid and I are both members of The War Widows Association of Great Britain and have known each other for around 10 years. She had mentioned in conversation that she’d retired to Spicer Lodge and how pleased she was with her new apartment.

I wasn’t too familiar with the Stourbridge area, but was finding that the upkeep of my house and its large garden was becoming too much for me. My daughter visited Spicer Lodge to view the apartments on my behalf and was certain that I would like it there. She was right, because once I’d visited myself, I loved it and it almost seemed meant to be!”

Spicer Lodge is located off Enville Street and is a development of 45 self-contained apartments set within landscaped grounds in a central location, just a short distance from public transport links, shops and the local amenities on offer in Stourbridge.

Enid Nash, who recommended Edna to Spicer Lodge, moved from her home in Dudley to a one bedroom apartment at the development in May 2012. Enid received a £2,000 thank you from Churchill Retirement Living for making the referral.

Enid said: “It’s lovely to have Edna living at Spicer Lodge and I’m very pleased she is happy with her new apartment. The development seemed very fitting for what she was looking for and we have both met lots of new friends since moving here.

“The facilities here at Spicer Lodge are fantastic and have been designed perfectly for older people. The development is very sociable and I personally really like the quality of the apartments and the size of their rooms. It is also very reassuring to know that there is always someone on hand if we need them. I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time at Spicer Lodge and I would certainly recommend it to anyone considering a retirement home.”
