Renowned Explorer and Author entertains Truro retirees

Apartment Owners at Churchill Retirement Living’s Tregolls Lodge in Truro enjoyed a talk from explorer and author Robin Hanbury-Tenison OBE, who at the age of 83 remains as adventurous and inspiring as ever. Robin visited the development on St Clements Hill in November to share stories from his illustrious career, and sign copies of his latest book Finding Eden.

Age is no barrier to Robin, who still travels widely, lecturing and visiting expeditions in the field, when he's not busy farming at his home on Bodmin Moor. Finding Eden tells of his 15-month journey into the heart of Borneo, where he led one of the largest ever Royal Geographical Society expeditions to study how vital rainforests are to our planet.

His visit to Tregolls Lodge was organised by Howard Embery, who has set up a book club and a library at the Lodge since moving into his new apartment and enjoys organising regular visits from local authors. It was a real treat for Owners to meet a man named by the Sunday Times as "the greatest explorer of the past 20 years" (in 1982) and as one of the 1,000 "Makers of the 20th Century".

I just love getting others into reading, and sharing my love for a good book" says Howard. "There are around 20 of us in the Tregolls Lodge book club now; we all get together in the Owners' Lounge fortnightly to discuss the individual books we are reading. We love having authors in to give a talk about their books, and it was wonderful to have Robin Hanbury-Tenison here sharing some of his experiences and impressing everyone with what he's achieved.

Jo Ridehalgh, Regional Marketing Executive at Churchill Retirement Living, adds: "Robin is a fantastic role model and it's clear that he's still living life to the full well into his 80s. We were delighted to host his inspiring talk and I'd like to say a big thank you to Robin and Howard for organising it. The book club is a perfect example of the many social activities we have at Tregolls Lodge and the friendly atmosphere that all our Owners enjoy."

Tregolls Lodge comprises 59 one and two bedroom privately owned retirement apartments and shared facilities, designed exclusively for the over 60s.
