As a nation, Britain has created some of the greatest foods that are both tasty and wholesome. With the Best of British fortnight starting on Saturday 17th September, together we can make an effort to embrace British food.
Keep an eye out in supermarkets for produce from Britain and endeavour to shop in local butchers, greengrocers, and farm shops that source food locally. Nothing beats old favourites like cottage pie and bread and butter pudding so when you’re entertaining guests make sure you cook something British.
To celebrate British food, we have rounded up our top ten favourite foods we can be proud of as a nation.
1. Fish and Chips
Commonly known for being a take away food enjoyed by the seaside. Deep-fried fish in crispy batter with golden chips is still one of our favourite low cost meals to this date.
2. Steak and Ale Pie
This rich and hearty pie is one of the UK’s most favourable pies typically served with gravy and chips or mash potatoes, especially on cold winter nights.
3. Full English Breakfast
Commonly known as a ‘fry up’, this breakfast is famous for its filling power, often keeping you full until dinner.
4. Sticky Toffee Pudding
As one of the best steamed desserts by far, this pudding is typically served warm with custard.
5. The Pork Pie
Undoubtedly a summer picnic favourite, this famous snack became popular amongst fox hunters in the late eighteenth century and it is still as iconic today.
6. Jam Roly-Poly
This childhood favourite is thought to have been created in the early nineteenth century and was often nicknamed dead-man’s arm or dead man’s leg.
7. Scones
Whether you put the cream on first and the jam on second, scones are the focal point of any traditional afternoon tea.
8. Crumpets
Served with lashings of butter, the crumpet dates back to the Victorian era. It is the extra yeast in the batter that creates the distinct soft texture with little holes.
9. Scotch Eggs
Formerly enjoyed by wealthy Victorians at picnics, the scotch egg now comes in various sizes and is still on supermarket shelves today.
10. Toad in the Hole
Rumoured to have once been called ‘frog-in-the-hole’, this homely dish of sausages cooked in batter is easy to make and scrumptious to eat.
