Peace and quiet just a few miles north of London? Hertfordshire is the place
The county of Hertfordshire has long been a quiet retreat from the city, loved for its ancient woodlands, clear chalk streams and attractive towns and villages.
It goes back a long way – the city of St Albans was an important Roman town, and the Roman Road of Watling Street still runs right through the county. Today St Albans is a vibrant and attractive city, with a magnificent cathedral, excellent shopping, museums and places to eat and drink.
The green and peaceful countryside is dotted with delightful places to visit. Famous houses and gardens include Hatfield House – once the home of Queen Elizabeth I – and Knebworth House. Hertfordshire was home to the great sculptor Henry Moore, and his galleries. gardens, studios and house at Perry Green are all open to the public.
There are castles at Berkhamsted and Hertford, and the mysterious grotto at Ware.
All in all, Hertfordshire is a perfect to place to relax and enjoy a well-earned retirement.
