Churchill Retirement Living’s new development in Haverhill has been turned into a training ground by local firefighters practising vital lifesaving techniques. Local schoolchildren were lucky enough to see it all first-hand and meet the Fire and Rescue teams from Haverhill and Newmarket.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service visited the new building on Camps Road during its construction to carry out a number of training exercises, including the use of the site’s 30 metre high crane to practise line rescue techniques.
On Thursday 11th October, 70 Year 2 pupils from Place Farm Primary Academy came to watch the training exercises taking place, meet the Fire and Rescue Service team and learn about their activities, as well as the importance of construction site safety.
Robbie Green, Crew Commander at Haverhill Fire Station, said:
This type of training is something we don’t often get the opportunity to do, so we’re extremely grateful for Churchill’s support. It’s important for our firefighters to constantly develop their skills and we rarely get the opportunity to train at the heights that a tower crane provides. This was a brilliant opportunity for us to practise and show the local kids our line rescue techniques. It was a pleasure to meet the kids too!

The children really enjoyed their visit to Churchill’s construction site, and everyone was very excited to see the Fire and Rescue Service team in action. It was also a great chance to learn about fire safety from the experts, as well as finding out about the importance of health and safety on a construction site like this.
