Local school children help make retirement garden blossom

Children from Waltham Holy Cross Primary School in Waltham Abbey showed off their gardening skills last week while visiting Churchill Retirement Living’s King Harold Lodge development.

10 children from the school’s Eco Club were invited by the Lodge to make its garden bloom this spring by helping Owners at the development plant a selection of seeds and bulbs. The visit was run by four retired Owners living at the Lodge, who have set up their own gardening group as a hobby to enjoy during their spare time.

Emma Bonham, teacher at Waltham Holy Cross Primary School, who organises the gardening club, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to King Harold Lodge and were fascinated as the Owners explained all about the flowers we were adding in the garden. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to work with the local community, and we’ll be returning to the Lodge again in the summer to see how the garden has grown.”

Yvette Christy, regional marketing executive at Churchill Retirement Living, said: “We were delighted to host the children from Waltham Holy Cross Primary School and were grateful for their help in making our King Harold Lodge garden somewhere really special for all of the Owners to enjoy. We have some fantastic Owners who have set-up their own gardening club and they thoroughly enjoyed seeing the children showing off their green fingers and getting stuck into the planting.”
