Award-winning retirement developer names Portswood development after Southampton WWII fighter aircraft

A new retirement development in Portswood has been named Spitfire Lodge in honour of World War II aircraft designer and former Portswood resident, RJ Mitchell, in the year the Royal Air Force (RAF) celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Located on Belmont Road, Churchill Retirement Living’s new development, Spitfire Lodge, comprises 73 one and two bedroom retirement apartments and communal facilities designed exclusively for the over 60s.

Deborah Waldeck, Regional Marketing Executive for Churchill Retirement Living, explains:

"The name Spitfire Lodge has been chosen for our new development due to the fighter aircraft’s link to Southampton - the first Spitfire came off the assembly line in Woolston in 1938 – and RJ Mitchell’s connection to Portswood. When we realised that 2018 also marked 100 years of the Royal Air Force, it seemed a fitting tribute to Southampton’s local heritage and everyone who has ever served with the RAF."

When complete, Spitfire Lodge will offer private, self-contained apartments with features such as a video-entry system, lifts to all floors, a 24 hour care and support system and a Lodge Manager. Communal facilities will include an Owners’ Lounge with Coffee Bar, Guest Suite, Wellbeing Suite and landscaped gardens.
